Early August means Assembly in the demoscene and it has been like that for well over a decade now.
Assembly is definately among the biggest parties of the year in terms of visitors although not all of the visitors go to Assembly for demoscene reasons.
Anyway, a new online party gallery has been added to the GFXZone and I am sure you guessed by now that it is for Finnish Assembly 2003.
This party has always seen the release of many graphics productions in the compos, and I am glad to say this year was no exception.
From all the graphics released at Assembly we have made a solution of 20 images from the handdrawn compo and 20 images from the freestyle compo.
Personally, I am pleased with the average quality of the images released at Assembly.
Go see if you agree in the new Assembly 2003 online gallery.
If you want to see all the entries, including the oldskool and fast graphics images,
a party archive is also available for download (42997 KB). Modem-users beware, the size of the archive is about fourtythree megabytes!
|
|
|
With advancements in technology it is natural that digital art like images evolves as well.
The demoscene started out with low-color palette based pixelled images, but images like that are becoming rare, most demoscene images are in 24bit nowadays.
At Assembly last month the party organizers had a compo where oldskool images could compete in a separate compo.
The poll question this time is: do you think 100% pixeled pictures should be in a separate compo?
You can give your answer to this question in the poll on the right side of this page.
This poll was suggested by Zixaq of Ephidrena and Creators. Thanks man!!
In our previous poll we asked what our visitors think is the most important aspect in a demoscene image.
For me it was pretty hard to decide between quality and atmostphere/style and I admit the line between these options is pretty thin most of the time.
A little over 50 percent of the voters thinks that style and atmosphere is the most important thing, 31 percent values overall quality most.
The remaining votes were spread over other aspects.
Check the old results if you are interested in the details.

It has been quite a while since the last update and the graphics I want to show you are stockpiling on my HD.
But I hope you will be a little more patient as the current update will consist of graphics from 2002 parties only.
As an appetizer for things to come and to tease you a bit I present you with the new image of the week, a recent coop by Phornee and Lentium.
Yes, I love to see people making quality 8-bit images!
The additional 2002 archives are for Cafe, Dreamhack and the Krangparty.
The graphics in these archives are of average quality, nothing exceptionally good.
The Cafe (2690KB) archive also contains the graphics from their ZX compo.
For Dreamhack (13081KB) I liked the entries by Saim, Acet1 and Dubmood,
and at the Krangparty (2942KB) Razorback made another appearance.

One of the countries that has provided the scene with many nice graphicians over the past few years is Spain.
In my opinion Spanish parties often have interesting entries in their graphics compos, but today you can check my statement for yourself.
I have uploaded two archives for Spanish parties - BCNParty 10 and Durango 4.
Shock ruled supreme in the 2D and fast compos at both parties, just get these archives and check the graphics out.
Downloads available for BCNParty 10 (7078KB) and
Durango 4 (6312KB). Enjoy!

If you are into C64 graphics and/or create C64 graphics yourselves I think you definately want to know about a C64 graphics compo that is happening right now.
On this site you can find all information regarding the compo, looks very interesting to me and I'll certainly check out the results.
The deadline is June 15th, which is a little over one week from now.

After a few movie-related polls it is time again for a graphics-related question on the GFXZone. Everybody has an opinion about demoscene graphics, but what is the most important aspect in a demoscene image for you personally? You can give the answer to this question in the poll on the right side of this page.
Out previous poll was has been up for quite a few weeks which resulted in a lot of votes.
In that poll I was wondering what you thought of the Lord of the Rings movie The Towers when compared to Fellowship of the Ring.
Almost 50% of the voters thought The Two Towers was equal or better as Fellowship of the Ring, check out the old results if you are interested in the total results.

Last weekend was easter and for the last couple of years that meant Mekka and Symposium.
Unfortunately MS is dead now, but the Breakpoint party emerged to fill the gap that Mekka left.
I was at Breakpoint party and I can say that the party managed to live up to (and beyond) the expectations I had.
A big thank you to the Breakpoint organization for some great memories!
You are a visitor of the GFXZone so you probably want to know about the graphics that were released in the compos at Breakpoint.
Some pretty darn decent images have been released at this party, and in the latest update we added a new gallery to the GFXZone with the best graphics from Breakpoint.
In the new gallery you will find 25 pictures that have been released, 20 images from the freestyle compo and 5 from the theme compo.
The theme for the Theme compo at Breakpoint was Ice.
One of my favourite images is the image by Helge, this image is also the new image of the week.
But there are many more brilliant images in this gallery, among others two very professional and very cool images by Acryl.
Other highlights include images by Visualice, xeNusion, Raven, Fireball and others.

A large archive with all Breakpoint compo graphics is also available for download. (24475KB)

Late last year the first edition of a new demoparty was held in France.
This party was announced as being somewhere between the Wired and the LTP, which suggested what visitors could expect from the party.
I am talking about State of the art 2002, and I have seen some seriously nice prods!
Later this month another first edition party will take place, this time in Bingen, Germany. Lets see what that party will bring!
Until then you'll have to make do with our latest update, which is an online party gallery for last years' State of the Art.
This new gallery shows the best entries from the graphics compos at that party, and there are many great graphics for you to look at!
Spread over three competitions 35 images are available online - oldschool, raytrace and a regular gfx compo.
I found it an extremely pleasant surprise to see some new graphics by Tenshu again.
But there are plenty images in this gallery, for example productions by Ak, Danube, Mikl, Splif and a very atmospherical scene by Nytrik just to name a few.

A large archive with all SotA compo graphics is also available for download. (24924KB)

In this update we provide you with compo graphics from some older parties from 2002.
Three archives have been added to the GFXZone:
Vip 4 (3130KB),
Syndeecate 2002 (2439KB) and
Slach 4 (2153KB).
The graphics from these compos are not extremely hot,
but what I liked from the Vip images are
oldschool entries by Critikill and Moxica and some of the graphics from the fast compo.
At the Syndeecate party in the Czech Republic
the compos were split in an Amiga and a PC part,
Wade and Slayer scored well in the Amiga compo.
At Slach a rather original entry by Deepnight won the compo.

There are quite a few sceners that have been around for a long time, but few have been as active as Visualice used to be. This guy has worked on a staggering amount of demoscene productions. Unfortunately for us Visualice recently left Haujobb to concentrate on other forms of art. We have updated his personal gallery on the gfxzone with plenty of high-quality graphics.
The updated gallery consists of 5 parts with 100 images in total, most of which are now finally available in their full PNG quality for the first time ever (thanks Timo!!). Older images are in the first parts of the gallery, more recent images can be found nearer to the end. To show that Visualice is also graphically active in a non-digital way, the fourth part of the gallery shows sketches. Some of the sketches that Visualice provided for us to show in his gallery are also available for purchase online, check it out if you are interested!

Over a year has passed since we posted our last Hidden message gallery,
so this gallery is well overdue for an update. And that is exactly what today's update is about!
If you don't know what these hidden messages are,
let me tell you that a lot of graphicians use a trick to hide information (usually text) in their images.
So some images that you already know for years might contain information you didn't know about.
Perhaps the graphicians are feeding you subliminal messages to vote for their images...
As usual, we will first give some time to find the hidden messages yourself,
and in one of the next updates we will reveal the hidden messages for you.
Discover what your favorite graphician has hidden for you to find.

At the start of a new year it is common for people to look back at the previous year and look forward to the year ahead.
Today we look back at the previous year with a new edition of one of our recurring theme galleries.
We combined every Image of the week of last year into the Image of the week gallery 2002.
This theme gallery has 38 images in total, the quality of the images is all above average, as you can imagine!

One of those parties is Danish TRSAC 2002 (4105KB).
Besides sketches, there are also decent entries at this party by Farfar, Wade, Dfekt and others.
Another Danish party is Scene Event 2002 (2633KB)
with entries by Dfekt, Trenox and Neuromancer.
At Solskogen 2002 (2197KB)
in Norway Sprocket, Statique, Visualice and Zack competed with graphics,
and on Twilight 2002 (1077KB)

Wade started on the Amiga demoscene somewhere in the early nineties and a couple of years ago it looked like he left the scene. Lucky for us he picked up his old habits again, so we can look forward to seeing more of his work in future productions.
Some of the images Wade created are really classics (imho), do you remember that old guy behind the window of the spaceship in the Amiga demo The Relic? That image was by Wade. A total of 25 images by Wade are available in a new personal gallery on the gfxzone. These images are mostly his older 8bit work, and additionally there are also a couple of more recent 24bit graphics by Wade. Enjoy!

Many parties have been held over the past few months, which means many graphics will be added to the GFXZone.
And I hope you like party archives, because we plan to add a lot of those to this site in the near future (knock on wood)!
In this update the first archive is for the Spanish Euskal 10 party.
Plenty of graphics were released in the 5 graphics compos at this party.
The current image of the week by Shock won this party, I have seen some in-between stages of his image and I am impressed!
But the Euskal archive has more to offer, other winner-quality graphics by Newalpha, Pwyll, Zaac and 8bit images by Interface and Leunam.
Lots of megabytes, but worth the Download (8590KB).
Furthermore, there is an archive for Buenzli 11 (2959KB),
where Acet1 ruled the compo with a kick-ass image, and an archive for
Antiq 2002 (2314KB).

With the release of the new Lord of the Rings movie gettings closer every single day, I was wondering about your movie theater habits.
Are you annoyed when the person 5 rows in front of you is eating something out of a crispy bag making so much sound you can't concentrate on the movie?
So, what is your favourite movie refreshment? :-)
Our last poll stirred an unusual amount of reactions from visitors in my inbox.
I don't mind, I always like to hear about your views!
The question we asked last time was when you thought the scene would die,
and it seems that about 60% of the voters think there will always be a demoscene in some form or another.
Check out the old results for a more detailed breakdown of the score if you are interested.

A new personal gallery has been added to the GFXZone, this time it is for the Polish graphician Rork.
Rork has been using his Amiga to create graphics for a long time and I am sure you have seen some of his graphics before.
Recently Rork started using a PC and a tablet to create 24bit graphics,
and I was glad to see that he has been able to bring his unique 8bit style into his 24bit graphics.
In this new personal gallery you will find a nice display of the best graphics Rork ever created.
Most of these graphics are 8bit, except for the image that is also our current image of the week.
20 Images in total have been added for your viewing pleasure.

Btw, Rork told me that he is looking for a job in the gaming industry.
So send him a mail now if you want to use his graphics in your project!

A lot of people creating demoscene graphics have been around for many years, sometimes even a decade or more.
For new graphicians it is always extra hard to get the recognition they seek.
One of those new graphicians is Polish BamboOS.
He has not been around very long, but I've seen his graphics all over the place.
Especially his logo's popped up in quite a few demoscene productions.
Besides doing graphics, BamboOS is also coding.

Twenty images from this Dutch newschool graphician are online for your viewing pleasure.
Don't expect any small 8bit graphics, all the images in this gallery are 24bit.
Besides the graphics Magicboy creates, you might also know him from his animations.
I vividly remember seeing his It's over animation on the last TakeOver party in 2001.
This is one of my favourite demoscene animations of all time.
It is available from scene.org if you are interested.

If a certain time of the year could be called party season, this is it!
The amount of parties that have been held lately is simply overwhelming.
In due time the graphics from these parties will find their way onto the GFXZone,
this update is for Assembly 2002.
Unfortunately I have mixed feelings about the graphics released at this year's Assembly.
The quality of the graphics is what you would expect from this party,
but the ranking does not correctly reflect the high quality of some of the graphics.
This seems to be a typical case where the preselection of graphics failed miserably.
For example: out of the roughly 50 images in the 'drawn' compo only 15 were preselected to compete,
and it looked to me like blind people were in the preselection team!
Because of this many graphics that deserved to be in the compo were not shown at all,
which must have been a huge disappointment for the graphicians involved.
Anyway, the GFXZone decided to show you those 'unworthy' graphics as well.
We selected 60 of the best images from the compos at Assembly.
The compos are Raytraced, Analog (scanned sketches/paintings) and Drawn (freestyle).
Don't look at the rankings too much, you decide which images you like.
Enter the Assembly 2002 online gallery
Not all graphics released at Assembly have been included in the online gallery.
If you are interested in a collection of all the graphics,
you could also download our party archive that has all the graphics from Assembly.
Beware though, the archive is very large!

A visitor suggested the question in the new poll to us.
When do you think the scene will die?
It may sound like yet another rant about the state of the scene,
but since I am convinced that everyone is the scene and the scene is everyone,
I am very curious about your views on this.
The last poll inquired about the preferred graphical scene art of our visitors.
It is probably not a complete surprise that most people prefer pixel and hand-drawn graphics,
but I was surprised to discover that a whopping 91% of you thought so.
These results
will be considered in future updates and galleries on the GFXZone.

In this update we have a lot of new graphics to show you.
A few party archives and an online party gallery for Symphony 2002.
In the short time the Symphony party exists, it has grown to one of the biggest (perhaps the biggest?) parties in Poland.
For the online gallery we have selected the 10 best graphics from the pixel compo at Symphony.
The winner image by Mime is also our current image of the week,
other interesting graphics by Critikill, Lester, Statique and others!
Enter the Symphony 2002 online gallery
The online gallery for Symphony contains only a selection of the graphics from that party,
we have also uploaded an archive with all graphics from all compos for
Symphony 2002 (7641KB).
Additional party archives are for Lobotomia 2002 (2359KB),
with an image by Visualice and for
React 2002 (1259KB).

The Gfx-twins are not real twins, but two friends who discovered that they got along very well doing graphics on C64.
From there they migrated to Amiga and painted lots of lowres graphics for Essence and Scoopex.
For this update we have created a new personal gallery with 25 of the images of the Gfx-twins.
All the images are small pallette images, and all the images have been created many years ago.

We have a few galleries on the GFXZone that are filled with images that share a theme.
One of those theme galleries is the Manga gallery,
which is obviously a collection of Manga-themed scene-images.
This theme gallery has been expanded with a fourth part and 20 additional images!
There are pixeled images, a bit of photoshop work and even a few traced images.
Some of the images have been created almost a decade ago, others are more recent.
A few of them are copies and a few are original.
Anyway, just check it out and see if there are some images you like.

Finally we can put a new poll online. What type of scene graphics do you like to see best?
For the sake of getting a clear result I tried avoiding going into too many detailed categories,

For the previous poll we asked you why you visit the GFXZone.
It seems that 40% of the visitors like the online galleries of the GFXZone best.

Just like every year around easter there are multiple demoscene parties sceners can go to.
The Gathering is one of those Easter parties and in this update we have a party archive with the compo graphics for that party.
There are some interesting graphics in the archive, but for me personally none of them really stood out among the others.
The pixel compo was won by Tmk.
Download the Gathering 2002 archive (6636KB).
Another Easter party is Birdie in Sweden, and we have an archive for that party too.
The best graphics at this party were created by Neurodruid and Magicboy.
Download the Birdie 2002 archive (2254KB).
Last party archive this time is for the Spanish party Durango.
Shock got second in the 2D compo, and this compo was won by Pwyll, who was also kind enough to send me the compo graphics from that party.

If we know what you like about the GFXZone you will enable us to tune this website to your wishes,
so for the new poll question we would like to learn why you visit the GFXZone?
Last time we asked when you were born, and you can see in the previous poll results
that most of the 301 sceners that voted have been created in the late seventies or early eighties.
Thanks for your votes.

Today we would like to officially announce a special project the GFXZone team is working on.
We are building a huge collection of demoscene graphics.
This collection is much larger than what is available online on the GFXZone
and we plan to release the entire collection to the demoscene on a DVD in the future.
We welcome everybody to participate in this non-profit project, contributions of personal graphics collections are especially welcome.
Over the next couple of days two of the biggest scene events of the year will take place, The Gathering and Mekka & Symposium.
I will be visiting Mekka myself, so this could be a perfect occasion for you to contribute to the DVD project.
If you are a graphician, a demoscene lover, or a mad collector like I am, take your graphics collection to Mekka and contribute to the project!
Every contribution is welcome: oldskool, lowres, newskool, hires, 8bit, 24bit, traced, C64, Speccy, CPC, full screen images, logos, cliparts, diskmag backgrounds, object textures, sketches and you name it.
You will be credited for your contribution.
If you are not going to Mekka and still want to contribute, or you have suggestions for the DVD project,
mail me. See you at Mekka!

In our previous poll we asked you for which graphician you would like to see a personal gallery, and 30 percent of you voted for Louie.
Because of this result, and because a Louie personal gallery should have been created on the GFXZone a long time ago,
we present you with a new online gallery. A Louie gallery :-)
Louie has been creating graphics for the demoscene for many years, so in his gallery you will find many classic images.
But I think it is also safe to assume that you will find lots of unknown graphics here -
I have received many graphics from Louie which he wanted us to include in this personal gallery!
Ofcourse his entries for early editions of The Party have been included (from TP93 onwards), but much more is available.
The first part of his gallery has a lot of classic lowres graphics and higher parts show more recent work.

Because of this poll the GFXZone now has a Louie gallery, you can check the old poll-results here.

The next poll is a so-called demographical poll (how appropriate).

Where Shtif ruled the graphics compos.
Also available are archives for
Hype 2002 (3007KB),
where a manga pic won the compo, and
0a000h 2002 (1668KB),
where Statique won pixel and Degrysin won traced.

We would like to hear from you who you think should get a personal gallery on the GFXZone.
Creating a personal gallery is not a five-minute job for us -
we always try to get in contact with the graphician, and ask if they will allow us to create a personal gallery.
This costs some time, but it does give the best results.
So if you will tell us who you think should have a personal gallery soon, we know where to focus our efforts...
We have compiled a short list of graphicians you can vote for.
If you think people are missing on the list,
just mail us directly
and tell us who you think should have a personal gallery.
With this poll you have the ability to directly influence the content of the GFXZone!

PERSONAL GALLERY

In this update we present you a new personal gallery that has been sadly lacking on the GFXZone until today.
The gallery is for Fiver, which makes it a new personal gallery for an oldschool graphician!
Fiver used to be a pretty active Amiga graphician in the mid-nineties.
A lot of his graphics are created in Amiga hires screenmode (640*256),
so we have vertically stretched those graphics to allow for a more correct aspect ratio when viewing.
The personal gallery shows 40 images by Fiver, enter the gallery here.
I vividly remember seeing his superb Artwork logo in the Amiga demo Greenday for the first time.
(That logo is image 14 in part 2 of his new personal gallery.)
In this demo there was a really cool palette-trick performed on the logo, which made it seem like a sunrise was happening in the picture.
Anyway, just watch the demo if you want to know what I mean :-)

Quite often I get mails from people having images that are not on the GFXZone, and I really appreciate that.
For some graphicians this happens more often than for others, but for Lazur this happens most often of all.
So when even Lazur himself started mailing me graphics that were not yet in his personal gallery I realised that it was high time to create an update!
As a result we bring you an update to the personal gallery of Lazur.
The last time we updated his gallery was back in 1999, and today 20 images have been added to his personal gallery.
When you check the gallery you will notice that Lazur has been experimenting a lot with graphical styles lately.
Those of you that try to see all the latest graphics will be familiar with a couple of the added images,
but I have also received a few images that I haven't seen anywhere else on the net.
The following link will take you directly to the 8th part of the updated
Lazur personal gallery,
which has most of the added images. Enjoy!

A couple of months ago the GFXZone started a new series of theme galleries about graphics on classic demoscene platforms.
The first theme gallery was for the Amstrad CPC, and this time we are focussing on the ZX Spectrum.
This machine has been very popular in the eastern parts of Europa and in Russia.
Its popularity in that part of the world was similar to the popularity of the C64 and CPC in western Europe.
To this very day the ZX Spectrum is a very popular platform at many Russian demoparties.
An article has been written about the history, the specs and the graphical capabilities of the Spectrum.
Especially the people who never used a Spectrum (like myself) will discover some interesting facts here.
The article has been written in close cooperation with the people from ZpiXel, a Russian scene site about graphics on the Spectrum.
It has been released simultaneously on the GFXZone and on ZpiXel.
Read the ZX Spectrum article here.
Ofcourse there are also a couple of graphics online for you to check out.
No less than 180 graphics from the Speccy-scene are awaiting your visit.
This gallery will give you a great overview of what the Spectrum is capable of, it includes old graphics and recent works.
Enter the new ZX Spectrum theme gallery.

Between Christmas and New Year is the time of The Party.
If you have seen all the demos from The Party, you will have noticed that a lot of productions are not too hot (unfortunately).
The same goes for the graphics released at The Party - there is some nice stuff, but I expected a bit more.
Overall I enjoyed the raytraced graphics more than the pixels.
We have created an online gallery that shows the top 10 pixel and top 10 raytraced graphics from The Party.
At the time this gallery was created a lot of names for the people who created the graphics were unknown, the gallery will be updated when more info is available.
For a complete collection of all the graphics, you should download The Party archive (14782KB).
Another added archive is for Arroutada 2001.
Jull was kind enough to give me access to those graphics that were not available on the GFXZone or the regular ftp channels.
The current image of the week is from that party.
Download the Arroutada archive here (5837KB).

To herald the new year we have a very interesting personal gallery and interview combo.
This time it is all about Unreal from Hungary (not to be mistaken with Polish Unreal).
Unreal has been most active as a demoscene graphician in the mid to end ninetees.
You have probably seen a few demos that feature artwork by Unreal.
If you have, you know that his graphics use no more than 256 colours and always have very distinctive colour schemes.
In the personal gallery we created for Unreal you can find 50 of his best images, the oldest images are from 1996.
Unreal has send us quite a few previously unreleased works for this gallery!
And also check out the highly appropriate Image of the Week by Unreal :-)
Mr Ed from the GFXZone had the opportunity to do an interview with Unreal.
It is not uncommon that GFXzone interviews take a long time to complete, but this interview was started about three years ago!
Unreal talks about his early years in the scene, about his own graphics and his current situation.

New year is usually a time of looking forward.
In this case looking forward to 2002 and the demoscene - what do you think will happen?
You can give your opinion in the new poll on the right of this page.
We at the GFXZone hope it will be a great new year for everybody!

Ho-ho-hoooo! It is Christmas time and we have a surprise gift for you!
3D Addict has created a high quality and very stylish wallpaper for your desktop.
The resolution is 1280x960 and the image shows a big demo-esque object set in a digital environment.
As you might expect from the GFXZone, a couple of classic demoscene graphics have been used as well.
The image also shows our URL and slogan.
On the right side of this page you will see your present waiting for you.
You can download it by clicking on the gift or by downloading it
here (1540KB).
(Don't worry, the giftwrapping is not included on the image :-))
Also, the current image of the week has a christmas theme.
Who would have known Santa Claus was a gamer?
Thanks to Jull for sending the image!
The GFXZone team wishes you a merry Christmas!

This update has been a bit delayed due to technical problems, but after some help from Jimbo/Planet-d the problems soon disappeared.
Without Planet-d the GFXZone would not exist in its current state, so thanks!
It seems to be the quiet season in the scene, let's hope that this is the quiet before the storm which is The Party.
Until then, we have a little update to our website.
What we added in this update are party-archives, but the quality of the graphics in these new archives is not what I would have liked to see.
Download added archives for the 2001 editions of
Kindergarden (1490KB),
Millenium(fr) (2628KB)
and Spoletium (797KB).
The biggest disappointment was for DreamHack (11707KB).
For a party that has almost 50 entries in the graphics compos I expected a few good entries.
But I regret to tell you that the quality of most of the graphics is very low.
Some of the traced entries could be considered interesting, so only download this archive if you are really interested or have a high speed modem...

This update contains a bit of reading material for graphicians looking for tips.
First of all, we have for you an article originally written by XBarr explaining how he created one of his pictures.
The picture he writes about is the train picture from the demo Toys by Gods and his article gives some insight into XBarr's approach when creating pictures.
Read his text here
Also, we removed some of the dust that was gathering on an old article on the GFXZone.
Maybe you remember the old DemoNews from a couple of years ago?
Well, in DemoNews Shaithis had a regular column called A graphician's tip book.
Because the articles have been written many years ago the information in it is sometimes outdated, but the concepts discussed still hold.
We re-worked the articles for you, so if you are looking for a good explanation
and some basic tips on the use of tools like DPaint or Photoshop (Version 3 :)),
this article is what you should read...
Lastly, we updated the Poll Question.
Maybe you remember last months question about 255 255 255 being black or white?
A surprising amount of visitors answered the question incorrect (about 1 in every 6).
The new poll has no wrong or right answer, only perhaps politically correct - What do you want for Christmas?

In our previous update we posted the fourth edition of the Hidden message gallery.
Now we post a new gallery with the same great 8bit images, but this time the hidden messages have been revealed.
Did you find all the messages?
The truth is in here!
|
|
|
Our Hidden message gallery is gradually becoming a real tradition on the GFXZone.
Today we have uploaded the fourth gallery with 20 new images that have a message hidden inside them.
If you think you have never seen an image with a hidden message before, check out the previous hidden message galleries and be surprised.
In this fourth edition Fame, Lazur, Made & Pix and many others have been feeding you subliminal information.
As usual, we will first give some time to find the hidden messages yourself, and next weekend we will reveal the hidden messages for you.

Dzordan has been a very active graphician for many years
and today we can show you a new personal gallery with his graphics on the GFXZone.
This new personal gallery has 50 images and gives you a stunning overview of what Dzordan has accomplished the past 6 years.
Some of the images in this gallery date back as far as 1995 and are great to see because they show how Dzordan started.
And there are also some very recent graphics in this gallery that show how the graphics of this Polish hardcore Amiga graphician have matured over time.
But little information is known about him, so that is why we are glad Dzordan agreed to do an interview with the GFXZone!
This large interview is definately worth your time as there is plenty of info hidden inside.
Did you know for example that Dzordan loves elephants, but has killed several mouses?
Or would you like to read Dzordan's views on The Matrix part II, or what he thinks about comparing his graphics to those of Lazur?
All this and much more in the interview I had with Dzordan

For a long time it was unclear if there would be a new edition of the Dialogos party this year.
But fortunately the organizers managed to sort out the difficulties and I am glad they did.

Graphics by Acryl, Fashion, Critikill, Tomic, Dfox and plenty of other graphicians.

submitted a news-items regarding the release of his
Infinity Textures v2.1:
I-Tex is a powerful seamless texture designer for all professional graphics artists who need seamless textures
of high quality for web design, presentations, DTP, 3D Rendering/Raytracing and game development.
The innovative interface was designed and fine-tuned for quick and comfortable working with multiple textures.

of highly flexible functions for a wide palette of texture effects.
The application supports scripts and can be extended with plug-ins.
Animated textures can be rendered by using the included particle system animator or the powerful generator engine functions.
A genetic texture generator is included that creates images by just a few clicks.
Images can be converted to seamless textures with various functions like kaleidoscopes and blend functions.

Many cool graphics have been created over the years on 8bit machines.
The GFXZone was able to show this to you a couple of weeks ago when we first showed a theme gallery with demoscene graphics from Amstrad CPC,
and we want to continue this trend for other platforms.
One of the 8bit platforms that is still very much alive is the ZX-Spectrum.
In fact, this part of the demoscene has shown great progress over the last 3 years or so.
So it makes perfect sense that a website about graphics on the ZX-Spectrum should be created.
And that is exactly what happened.
Placebo, a Russian group, opened a new scene portal dedicated to ZX-Spectrum graphics, called ZpiXel.
The website is in Russian, but I think that you will find it very easy to find the images.
The reason for this is that the layout of ZpiXel is based on some other website about demoscene graphics that you sometimes visit. :^)
Visit ZpiXel now!

If you like archived galleries, then we have a lot for you to enjoy in this update!
All archives are for recent parties from 2001.
Our first archive is for the Polish Delirium party (2690KB),
and has good graphics by for example Lester, Mantra & Ural.
The Latvian Phat party (1829KB) is 8bit oriented
and the archive has many very goodlooking graphics from ZX Spectrum, but also 24bit imagery by Critikill & Acryl.
On the Trsac party (2950KB) in Denmark, one of the compo's was a sketch compo.
Other highlist from that party include a nice lowres 8bit by Fireball and an image with a message by Mogens.
Besides all that, we also uploaded archives for
Digital Nexus (1009KB),
Norvegia (3954KB) &
Syndeecate (3283KB).
|
|
|
Two archived party galleries have been added to our growing collection.
They are archives for parties that were held this summer, one for
Core 2001 and another for Slach 2001.
The Core 2001 (9252KB) party is a Hungarian party from last August.
The best images in this archive are a truecolor image by Inferno and pixels by Critikill, Mime and Azure,
who won the pixel compo with his entry.
Kel Solaar created a manga-style trace image that won the 3D compo at the French
Slach 2001 (7466KB) party.
There are a few other very enjoyable graphics in this archive as well.

If you have been involved in the demoscene for a lot of years,
chances are that your first computer was not the system you are currently using.
Plenty of sceners first became interested in the scene in the days of the C64, CPC or Spectrum.
Obviously, this means that many demoscene graphics have been (and still are being!) created for these platforms.
So the GFXZone is bringing these graphics to your attention by creating theme galleries for each platform.
Today's theme gallery is completely focussed on the Amstrad CPC.
Many sceners have created graphics for this platform, but did you know that Made was one of them?
There are 130 images in this new gallery, and still the total size of all the images combined is well under one megabyte :-)
Enter the new CPC theme gallery.
For the people that have never worked with this machine, or for the ones that just want to reminisce the good old days,
we have also written a little article about the Amstrad CPC and its graphical capabilities.
The article can help you understand why you can't run Photoshop on these little babies.
Read the CPC article here.
We want to create the best possible oldschool theme galleries for all oldschool platforms,
so if you have a collection of graphics for one of these platforms,
please contact us.
We are very interested to hear from you!
And also, check out our new poll and let us know what your first computer was.

Over the last couple of months a lot of new personal galleries have been posted on the GFXZone from various Polish demoscene graphicians.
Today is no exception and we can present you with a new Polish personal gallery.
This time the spotlights are on Mantra.
This fresh two-part personal gallery for Mantra has 40 images in total.
The first part with 20 images contains only logos, here you will find old logos and new ones in both 8bit and 24bit.
The second part has Mantra's other pics, including some very cool diskmag panels and all his recent party entries.
What I really appreciate about Mantra's work is his abundant use of colors,
which give his images a sparkling and sometimes even cartoonish appearance.
Visit the new Mantra gallery here.
Btw, earlier this month the GFXZone featured a Mime personal gallery, and today we added this new gallery for Mantra.
Both these people have very recently joined the gfx-only group Scenic.
Coincidence? You decide....

It does not happen very often that a new party is successful in the very first edition.
The Symphony 2001 party was held last weekend in Poland for the first time,
and based on the Amiga demos and compo graphics I have seen I'd have to say
that this party has made an impressive start.
So we have selected 23 images from the graphics compos at Symphony 2001 and put them in
an online gallery, 15 pixel images and 8 raytraced ones.
There are for example some good images by Kazik, Slayer, Neuromancer
and a great coop by Mantra & Critikill. But there is plenty more for you to view.
The party was deservedly won by Mime with a quite "mad" image.

A couple of weeks ago I got an email from Jamon
and he wrote that it was a disaster that the GFXZone did not yet have a personal gallery with his graphics.
I agreed with him and suggested that this catastrophe could only be corrected in one way -
so for this update we have created a personal gallery with the graphics of Jamon.
In total 40 images by Jamon are in this personal gallery.
The first part of his gallery contains a lot of older logos and graphics in 256 colors or less.
In the second part you can find more recent 8bit graphics, but also many 24bit images.
Just visit the new Jamon gallery,
and I promise you won't be disappointed!!
And by the way, Jamon aspires a job as a graphician for a game-company somewhere in Western Europe.
He has prior experience as 2D and 3D graphician in the game industry,
so if you think you or your company can use his services, send him
a mail.

Plenty of the graphicians that are active in the demoscene today have already been active for a number of years.
But it does happen every now and then that a new talent emerges on the demoscene horizon who starts creating good graphics right away.
And what better way for the GFXZone to bring such people to your attention than by creating a new personal gallery?!
One of those fresh talents is the Polish graphician Mime.
He has been active in the demoscene for a little over one year now, but his portfolio has already grown to impressive proportions.
The new personal gallery with his images contains 25 truecolor images,
and I bet that a lot of these will be completely new to you.
Mime kindly send us a very new image for this occasion,
which he created only a couple of days ago.
This world-premiere image happens to be our new image of the week!

Fred is a Swiss graphician that has been around for quite a long time.
Around two years ago the GFXZone did an interview with Fred,
but somehow we never created a gallery with his images.
Now this has changed an we can show you a personal gallery with demoscene art by Fred.
20 images are in this new personal gallery, a lot of those images are logos.
Most of these pixels were created many years ago, so this gallery is bound to bring back some memories for you.
But also his newest image is present which won the Buenzli party a couple of days ago!
Visit the new Fred gallery on the GFXZone
and pay a visit to his homepage which recently got a big makeover.
Also we uploaded a party archive for Buenzli 2001,
which contains a couple of very nice images.
As mentioned earlier there is one image by Fred, and this image had some heavy competition
of a brilliant image by Splif. There was only one point difference in the final results!
Other good images included are by Ak and Jibe.

Another new personal gallery has been added to the GFXZone.
This time it is for Ward,
a Hungarian graphician who is doing both 2D and 3D.
A total of 30 images are present in this new personal gallery,
and a lot of these images will be unknown to you because Ward provided them
to the GFXZone from his own personal collection!
The first part of the new gallery contains 20 2D images by Ward, including some of his
really old pictures. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to notice the favourite
theme for Ward - 16 out of the 20 images in the first part show girls!
The remaining 10 images in the third part of his gallery are all 3D.
This includes the current image of the week and a few other highly detailed images.

Oh, and Ward is currently looking for a graphics-related job somewhere in Western Europe.
So if you or your company is interested in using his services, send him
a mail quick.
Also, the personal gallery for Partikle has been updated.
5 new images have been added to the second part of his personal gallery.
These images include the artwork he did for the latest Hugi,
a very new and previously unreleased image and his Assembly entries,
including the pic that won this party!

Soon after that Neuromancer was contacted and now we are able

A total of 25 images are in this new personal gallery,
almost all the images are 8bit and a lot of them are in Amiga-specific resolutions.

Today the GFXZone is able to show you a new personal gallery that gives a good overview of BoO's carreer in the scene.
A total of 50 images are online for you to see in our BoO gallery.
The first part of the gallery has a lot of logo's, it even has some of his very old images, when he was still known as Mace.
His newer images can be found in the third part of the gallery.
Currently BoO is working in England for a gaming company that has hired a lot of sceners!
For more information about his job and about BoO himself, you could read the interview that
MrEd held with BoO.
Read the BoO interview.
And while you are reading the interview, we have something else to keep your modem occupied.
We have created a sizable set of party archives for two recent parties.
First there is Paradox 2001 (5363KB),
where an image by Green7 won the graphics compo. And we also have
Scene event 2001 (4692KB),
that had a graphics compo with a few nice traced entries.

Recently we have been adding a lot of new personal galleries on the GFXZone and
this update keeps up with those traditions! This time we created a personal gallery
with the graphics of the French graphician called Zone.
A total of 35 images have been included in this new personal gallery.
The first part of the gallery has a lot of old pics and logos dating back to the
early days of Zone's scene years, and the second part contains more recent images.
To see how Zone's graphics improved over time, you should enter his gallery

PERSONAL GALLERY
|
|
Another personal gallery has been created on the GFXZone.
Today we are able to present you a personal gallery with the scenegraphics from
Slayer.
The gallery gives a complete overview of the images created by Slayer so far.
Some of his older images are included, but you will also be able to see his newer work,
which includes graphics for various Appendix demos and his contribution
for the Mekka & Symposium graphics compo this year.
The Slayer style is very distinctive. Striking features in the graphics
from this Polish 8bit Amiga pixeler for me are the original and highly imaginative scenes,
and his obvious fascination with the combination of technology and (human) life.
Don't expect to find any 24bit images in this gallery, just expect the most
complete compilation of Slayer-graphics you will find anywhere on the web!
25 Images are included in this personal gallery,
now start enjoying :)

The logos and his older pictures are in the first gallery and the newer images in the second.
Among his older pictures you will also find images he created on his Amiga.
Can you guess which ones? :-)

This update to the GFXZone is done from the TakeOver
partyplace in Eindhoven, Holland, using the killer internet connection that this party has to offer.
The party is still happening at the moment, so no official results are known yet.
But I am taking a guess at the image that will win the compo by making the entry by Critikill
our new image of the week! Some other good entries in the compo include entries by
Cp, Mirage and a coop image by Arancia & Peachy.
Enjoy the graphics in this cool
archive (8975KB)!
June 27th: Updated the archive with party results and surprise compo graphics.

Studying the graphics of others is a great way to improve your own technique.
For this purpose the GFXZone has created the steps gallery.
In these galleries you will find in-between stages for a lot of demoscene graphics.
Today we bring you the fourth edition of this steps gallery, and as usual this brings you 20 more images to study.
There are pixelled pictures and 24bit works, originals and copies, recent pics and golden oldies.
A couple of the steps are from images that were released in the GFXZone coop compo.
In these new gallery you will find works by Cp, Critikill, Jamon, Kthulu, Lazur,
Tmk, Ward, X-man, Zone and several other surprising contributions!
Some of the graphicians contributed their graphics by sending their steps to us directly (Thanks!).
This is very helpful to us as steps are usually very hard to find on the web.
So if you have some steps you want to share with the world, please send them to
us!
You will be helping a lot of other graphicians who want to learn from your work.
Visit the fourth edition of the steps gallery here

Manga is a drawing style used in Japanese comic series.
Sometimes scene graphicians also create images in this drawing style.
The GFXZone has a special theme gallery dedicated to these images.
This theme gallery has ben expanded with 20 additional images which form the
third part of the Manga gallery.
If you have some scene graphics on your HD for a future fourth edition of this gallery,
please send them to us soon!
Furthermore, two parties have been added to the party archives.
The first archive is for Underscore 2001 (5945KB).
In the hires compo at this party a sketchy image by Spike won first place.
Other nice images are by Tomic and a manga-type image by Louie :-)
The Birdie 2001 (1355KB)
pixel compo was won by Nde with an 8bit lowres busty redhead picture...

In The Netherlands we have a saying that goes something like "You learn something new every day".
This happened to me some time ago when a visitor of the GFXZone alerted me to a Polish graphician called ae.
I had never seen any graphics by ae, and I expect this is the same for many of you.
So I contacted this mysterious graphician and asked him if the GFXZone could create a personal gallery with his graphics.
He generously agreed and today we can present you with an overview of the demoscene graphics created by ae.
There are 35 images in this gallery. The first part has mainly 16-color graphics that were created on an Atari a long time ago.
The second part contains some more recent 24bit works, including the full version of the "Sacrifice of a male virgin" (pic 11),
which has been image of the week a couple of months ago!
Enter the ae gallery here!

Three archived party galleries have been added to the GFXZone for three recent parties.
The first archive is for Fiasko 2001 (1558KB).
The image that won the pixel compo at this party is also our current image of the week.
Other highlights from this party are a trace by Degrysin and a cruel pixel by Neo.
The two other added archives are for
Escape 2001 (3019KB) and
Millennium 2001 (2298KB).
On the Finnish Escape party, Dipe and Random delivered good pixels and the trace compo was won by Uncle-X.
The Russian Millennium party has some nice traces by Y2r

Madd & Mustafa
are two Polish pixel graphicians that are often mentioned together because they have created quite
a few images as a coop team. Unfortunately they are no longer active
- the last pics from Madd are from 1998 and Mustafa's latest image dates back to 1999.
The GFXZone commemorates their achievements in two personal galleries.
In these galleries you will see that they made a great team,
but that they were also very capable graphicians when they were working solo!
The Madd personal gallery did exist
on the GFXZone before and has been updated with a few new bitmaps and some final versions of his graphics.
For Mustafa a new personal gallery has been created.
The pics in both galleries have been sorted chronologically on Madd's and Mustafa's personal request.
Also, we updated the personal gallery for the Swedish graphician
Flood from Noice.
Compared to the last version of his gallery 15 fresh images have been added.
Among the additions are some rather abstract images and ofcourse Flood & Random's
entry for the GFXZone coop compo.
All the added images are available in the newly created third part of the
Flood personal gallery.
Personal quote from Flood: "Euklides was right, there is a point in abstraction..."
Enjoy!

Just a quick update, but with a lot of quality graphics!
We created a party gallery with compo graphics for the Mekka & Symposium 2001 party!
This is only a preview of the gallery,
because a handful of graphics from the compos are not yet available.
As soon as we have those, a final version of the gallery will be created.
But this way you can already take a look at most of the images from the compos.
I think you will agree that the pictures are stunning and the quality is very high!
So many good graphicians were competing at this party,
that this gallery will be one of the best on the GFXZone!
Enter the preview version of this new gallery
here.
Finally my compliments to the Mekka & Symposium crew for making this party happen.
I had a great time!

They are not yet available on the regular ftp-sites, but we managed to get a hold of the compo
graphics for last month's Addict Anniversary.
The 24bit compo (2177KB)
has good graphics by Bamboos & Mime.
In the pixel archive (258KB)
with the you will find some extremely nice entries by Rork and Fame (the current image of the week).
And finally the trace archive (2178KB)
has some nice renders by Io.

Root88 / Ice
submitted a news-items regarding their renewed website:
The ever popular tiles game at tiles.ice.org has been completely recoded!
There are dozens of new features, including multiple public and private quilts, user voting,
feedback forms for every tile, and much more!
If you have never seen the tiles game you should definitely check it out.
Basically, a large image is created by having individual artists do one tile at a time.
When an artist checks out a tile, they don't get to see the tiles around theirs.
They only get a 15-pixel strip from the bordering tiles.
This allows them to blend their tile in with the others without being able to tell what it's blending into.

Every graphician that has ever created palette-based images knows that it is possible to hide messages in those images.
Once every while the GFXZone puts a couple of images with hidden messages online.
Today is one of those days and we present you with the third edition of our
Hidden message gallery.
As usual we first give you the opportunity to find the hidden messages yourself.
In one of our next updates we will upload a gallery that shows the same pics with the hidden messages highlighted.
You can discover the messages right now by visiting our new hidden message gallery,
part 3
This new gallery has images by Facet, Lazur, Leunam, Made,
Mustafa, Zone & many others. Go ahead and try to discover what these
graphicians are feeding your subconsious mind!
Thanks to Mr Ed for his help in locating the messages!

For this update the GFXZone is able to offer you a very cool make-over on the personal
gallery of Critikill, who is a graphician for Azuma & Farb-rausch.
This personal gallery was first created in May 2000, and since that time Critikill has created a lot of new images.
As a result 29(!) images have been added to his online personal gallery on the GFXZone.
Note that a lot of these images have never been released before!
At that time we also did an interview with Critikill, this interview is still online for you to read.
Just don't forget to visit the updated Critikill personal gallery here,
as there is some unique material to enjoy!
Note: the images in the first part of this personal gallery were also present in the previous Critikill gallery.
So if you are looking for the added images you should jump to the second or third part of the gallery by
clicking on the little number-buttons just above the thumbnails in the gallery.
These buttons will take you straight to updated parts of the Critikill gallery. Enjoy!

Finally there is another update to the GFXZone! A big thank you to all the concerned people who mailed.
Today's update adds a lot of archived galleries for demoparties from 2001, and the first one is for Synthesis 2001.
This party was held last weekend near Paris in France and the quality of the compo graphics is very acceptible!
Plenty of good graphics available from Krabob, Nytrik, Shi,
Zaac, Zone and ofcourse the current image of the week by Lenudist.
Download the complete set here (2340KB).
The next archive is for MindReSources 2001.
One of the compos on this party was for vector-based graphics, and this unusual compo had some nice entries.
All the graphics from this party are combined in one
archive (1668KB).
Other uploaded archives contain the compo graphics for
Iradium 2001 (522KB),
Mekanisaatio 2001 (803KB) and
Performance 2001, where Random won first place in both the
pixel (657KB) and the
trace (615KB) compos.

Partikle now has his own personal gallery on the GFXZone!
The gallery shows 20 of his scene pictures, and this collection contains a lot of pictures
that you will probably recognize from party compos.
But Partikle is a graphician who draws a lot of "real-life" images using traditional
techniques and tools. These images are however not included in this gallery :)

A new personal gallery has been added to the GFXZone collection.
This new gallery is for the images of Dr.Zulu
This name might not sound too familiar to you, but Dr.Zulu has been active in the
demoscene for a lot of years and I am sure that you have seen some of his images before.
Lately Dr.Zulu is stepping up a bit by participating in a few party compos, the most
recent party being The Party 2000,
where his image Memories of blue finished at a disappointing ninth position
The style of his work has changed dramatically over all those years and the gallery gives you a good impression of this change.
The first part of his gallery shows all his older 8bit images, and the second part of the gallery is an overview of his more recent work.
Characteristic for his newer images is the extreme sharpness and the eye for detail.
Note that quite a few of the 35 images in this new gallery have never been released before!
Start the tour in the first part of the Dr.Zulu gallery

Orgasmatron! / X-Trade submitted a news-item regarding
The Best Of The Amiga Scene Audio CD:
5 Years ago me and 2 friends of mine decided to make an Audio CD containing the BEST Amiga songs made ever.
The CD sold quite well. Now we only have 2 pcs left of it.
Even if there still is a slight demand for this CD I reconned the price
for making new ones is far too high.
So, last week I decided to make MP3's out of this CD and put it on the net.
Not all the songs are available yet, but I'm uploading them as fast as I can.
The songs are free, and you may of course download them and enjoy them.
Visit mp3.com to download.
IF the response is good, I will remaster the songs directly to MP3 to gain soundquality.
IF the response is even better, well, a TBOTAS #2 may be under it's way :)
Here
is the original announcement at Aminet from 1995.
Hope you will enjoy this one!

Today we bring you a new edition of our steps gallery.
These galleries help you when you want to study how other graphicians create their pictures,
because you can look at in-between stages of the pictures they created!
This third edition of the steps gallery brings you 20 more images to study.
There are pixelled pictures and 24bit works, originals and copies, recent pics and golden oldies.
A few of the steps are from images that were released in the graphics compo at The Party 2000,
there just has to be something in there for everyone!
But maybe you are a new visitor and you never visited the previous steps galleries?
In that case you should check out those previous galleries as well, as there are a lot of hard-to-obtain images for you to study.
Some of the highlights in this gallery include steps for images by Danny,
Dr Zulu, Inferno, Kthulu & X-Man.
Partikle supported the steps gallery by sending us 3 high-resolution
versions of his images. The biggest one is 3200*2400!! Thanks to everyone who helped!

Do you like Manga? Do you like scene graphics?
If your answer to both these questions was yes then I have something that might interest you!
We have put the second edition of our Manga gallery online.
Mr.Ed collected twenty images. There is a lot of variation in these images -
some are lowres, others high - some are truecolor, others are palettebased.
But they have one thing in common, their manga theme.

Wishbone / GFXZone submitted a news-item regarding
demoscene education:
We - Epidemic,
a French demoscene organization of an engineering school - recently got a room in the school.
We are representing the demoscene in the school, organizing demo projections, demo programming courses, and coding parties.
So, we need a maximum of demogroup logos in order to print them and stick them on the wall.
If you have posters, flyers or things like that representing the demoscene, we are interested too.
We seek logos which enter on a sheet 21x29.7, portrait or landscape, with a very good definition for the impression.
The ideal would be logos into vectorial format (Illustrator or Photoshop 6.0), if not we advise JPEG.
Logos in grayscale would be better to be printed on A3 with a photocopier.
It would also be useful to have an URL registered on the poster (colored poster would be cool =).

X-Man / Sunset Design submitted a news-item regarding
GrafX2:
After another long period of inactivity (studies+laziness),
we have decided to release the source code of GrafX2
so that motivated people can continue and port it to other OSes.
You can download it at
Sunset Design's homepage
then choose GrafX2 in the menu on the left.
For some people this could sound like a bad news because this means we
won't make new versions. But on another hand, I think it's a good news
because I feel optimistic there will be good coders out there who will
make the effort to understand our code and port it to... Linux?
DirectDraw (high res available under NT&W2K)?...

Three more parties have been added to the party archives!
The first one is Dreamhack 2000.
This big Swedish party always attracts a lot of talented graphicians, and this year was
no exception. Thanks to Paul from the Dreamhack crew for sending us lossless versions of
some of the better images!
The pixel (2408KB) archive
has images by Lazur, Mind, Neurodruid and many others.
In the archive for the trace compo (2122KB)
you will find some very enjoyable images as well!
Second party on todays list is the Spanish BCN Party 2000.
Download the archive here (1087KB).
NewAlpha's image deservedly won the 2D compo at BCN. His image made me remember
a certain 'angelic' coop picture that was released many years ago... :-)
Last party in todays update is RTSY 2000.
This party was held in France a couple of months ago.
First place in the pixel (2089KB)
compo was for Zone, and Denethor achieved this rank in the
trace (553KB) compo.

Btw, some people say that it took our civilization thousands of years to reach what we have now.
That might be true, but that is only for pessimistic people.
Myself, I am an optimist, and to me a unique day like this is like the beginning
of something new. Just look at todays date: 01/01/01 !!
I mean, if those numbers aren't a sign of a new beginning, I don't know what is.
Today truly is the beginning of the future and I am proud to be a part of it. Happy New Year!!

The time between Christmas and New Year is always a good time for sceners,
because that is when The Party is held.
Being the GFXZone we are ofcourse interested in the images that were released
in the graphics compos of The Party, so we have created a gallery for you that has
all the entries from the pixel compo!
This really is a must-see gallery, as the quality of the entries is very acceptible,
despite the regular supply of images based on scans. Visit the pixel gallery for
The Party 2000 here.
We also have an archive with the entries from the 3D compo at The Party 2000
available (3483KB).

A lot of you have speculated on which graphicians are responsible for which pictures,
but now you can finally know for sure, because we have the full results available.
The images that were submitted last week have been studied by our team of judges
and the results are simply stunning. The pictures that were voted top 3 by our
judges are only 4 points apart in total score!
And the winners of this edition of the GFXZone coop compo are
Green7 and Visualice.
Congratulations!
We have created a very special gallery for this occasion.
Besides viewing the pictures and discovering who was in what team,
you will be able to read what the judges thought of each of the images.
(The judges did not know who created a picture, there are some really interesting comments here.)
Also, there are a lot of user comments and some pictures even have special extra's
added to them, like stages of the entry or a PSD distributed entry.
Explore the gallery, read the comments, discover the hidden extra's and enjoy :-)
The further you scroll down in the gallery, the better the pictures get.
The number one picture is on the bottom of the page, so the gallery is sort of like
a countdown to perfection! Visit the gallery here
or view the quick results.
We would like to thank all the people who have helped to make this compo possible.
Without your help this compo would not have been as good as it turned out to be
and we hope to see you again for the next compo! If you have some remarks,
questions or anything else about the compo, you are welcome to use the
forum
or send us a mail.

To ease the waiting for the final results of the GFXZone coop compo,
we created another regular update for you. If you still want to visit our
gallery with unsigned versions of the coop compo images, than this will be
one of your last chances!
Todays update has new archived galleries for four parties!
In alphabetical order, the first archive is for the Dutch Party
Ambience 2000 (1272KB),
and has some nice bitmaps by Critikill, Gizmo & Magicboy.
The archive for Lobotomia 2000 (1473KB)
is filled with graphical splendor by people like Los, Partikle, Visualice and others.
We also have archives for French Millenium 2000 (842KB),
which should not be confused with the Russian Millennium and an archive for
Proxy 1886 (348KB),
which was funnily enough held earlier this year...
|
|
|
The deadline for the GFXZone coop compo has passed
and this means that we can now show you the entries that arrived!
We received a total of 12 images, which means about 50% of the teams have delivered.
Although this means the quantity of the pictures is a bit lower than we hoped,
the quality completely makes up for this! I guess Santa arrived early this year...
Please note that the gallery we created for you contains unsigned versions
of each of the entries. This is because currently our expert team of judges
is working on the final results for this compo and they will use these very same pics
for their work. In a couple of days, when the judges are done, we will replace
the unsigned pictures with fully signed images in a very special gallery.
So for now you will just have to guess who contributed to which pictures, just like
the judges.
If you want to read how the judges will rate these pictures, you could visit our
judges guide.
I think you will agree that these judges have a very hard task!
OK, enough talk. Visit the unsigned
coop gallery!
And if you are still in the mood for more compo, why don't you participate in
the CFXWeb graphics compo.
Their deadline is the 31st of December!
|
|
|
The final deadline for the GFXZone coop compo is very close now!
If you have not yet send us your team's contribution then you have to hurry,
because the deadline is midnight next tuesday!
You can send us your contribution by mail
or try to meet us on #pixel.
After receiving a contribution for the compo we will send a confirmation mail to both members of a team.
If you haven't received such a mail, it means we haven't received your contribution!

messages are highlighted. Did you find all the messages?
Discover what your favorite graphician has hidden for you to find.
The truth is in here
And this week we also have another great gallery for you to enjoy!
This gallery contains the pictures from the graphics compos at
Satellite 2000.
Brilliant masterpieces by Dzordan, Kazik, Mime and other
talented graphicians!

Today we bring you the second edition of our Hidden message gallery.
Mr Ed has been searching the deep and dark vaults of the GFXZone archives and he has located 20 more images for you.
The pics in this gallery may seem normal images, but there is more to them than meets the eye.
Every single picture contains extra information that is not visible to the naked eye.
Next week we will upload a gallery which shows the same pics with the hidden messages highlighted.
You can discover the messages right now by visiting our new hidden message gallery,
part 2
On a sidenote I should also mention that the participants of the GFXZone coop compo have just
one week left before the deadline of the competition.
Also, if you are a fan of Dzordan, you should check out this weeks
picture of the week. Brilliant stuff!

The deadline for the GFXZone coop compo is two weeks
away, so we have created another update to entertain you while work on the competition
entries is commencing, and the update turned out the be pretty special indeed!
The main attraction this time is an update to the personal gallery of Mermaid.
Now the Mermaid gallery has a total of 169 pictures, which easily makes this the personal
gallery with the largest amount of pictures on the GFXZone.
At the same time the total size of all 169 pics combined is well under 1 single megabyte!!
This is because the Mermaid gallery containts loads of C64 16-color pictures and also
a couple of pixelled 8bit graphics.
The Mermaid gallery has been revamped from scratch. Visit the updated personal gallery
of the queen of C64 pixels here
Also, we uploaded three archives containing all the graphics from the competitions
at last months Conference 7007 party in Hungary.
My personal favourite in these archives is the winning trace picture by Narn.
Download the archives here:
24bit (1026KB),
pixel (330KB) &
trace (743KB).

The GFXZone people database is being maintained by
Wishbone of the GFXZone crew.
Earlier this week the people database
reached another big milestone by adding its 250th entry!
Congratulations to Wishbone and thanks to all the people who
registered in the database.

Three parties have been added to the growing collection of parties with archived galleries.
The best archives in today's update are for this year's edition of Dialogos
The 2D archive (3247KB)
for Dialogos has some brilliant pics by CP and Peachy,
a very nice coop picture by Janne & Visualice and some other
extremely pleasant graphical surprises! This really is an obligatory download!
We have also put a 3D archive
(713KB) online for this party.
Two other archives are for the Spanish party Arroutada 8.
The pixel archive (401KB)
has a good picture by Newalpha and there are some nice traced pix in
the 3D archive (638KB).
The last two added archives are for TRSAC '00.5.
If you are into 8bit pics, than the
pixel archive (459KB)
for this party is definately for you. Highlights are by Farfar and Unreal.
The traces in the 3D archive (580KB)
are also of good quality.

SkIlLiOn approached the GFXZone with a question
regarding Virtual Dreams logos.
He is also searching for a good graphician that can help him by drawing a logo.
Note that he is willing to pay real money for your help!
I'm searching for some Virtual Dreams logos but it seems to be impossible
to find a site with these logos.
So, if you've knowledge of sites where I could find V.D. logos....
it will be very cool that you let me know !
I also searching for a good graphicican who could draw a logo for me....
of course, I will pay for it !
If you know a very good graphician who could do that for me
please feel free to contact me....

GFXZone coop picture compo
|
|
Today officially marks the start of the GFXZone coop compo.
The topic for the compo is "In the autumn of my madness".
A total of 25(!) teams have been created and all participants have received a personal
mail informing them about their randomly assigned coop partner.
Which graphicians are randomly matched together in a team will be announced on the
GFXZone when the compo has ended. The deadline for the compo is one month
from now, the 12th of December 2000 at 23:59 CET. At that moment the final results
will be published on the GFXZone in a very special gallery!
We hope that all participants have fun when creating their entry for the
competition.

GFXZone coop picture compo
|
|
If you still plan to take part in the GFXZone coop compo
then now is your last chance to act on these plans.
Next Saturday the 11th at 23:59h CET the registration period ends and this will also
mark the start of the competition.
The GFXZone coop compo is a unique scene-compo where teams of graphicians create a
picture based on a topic that is set by the GFXZone. The most challenging part about
this compo is that nobody knows who will be their coop partner until the competition
actually starts! We think that this fun idea for a compo will bring people in contact
with other graphicians, whom they would normally never meet or cooperate with!
Read the rules for a complete description of the compo.
The people that entered the compo are from all over the world, so this is a truly global
event. USA, South America, Russia and ofcourse all of Europe are represented.
Check the list on the right of this page for a list of people that already decided to
participate in the compo. If you want to enter the compo yourself, send us a confirmation
mail asap!
Registrations received after the registration periode has ended will be in vain!

Today we bring you a very special new theme gallery - a steps gallery.
This is a gallery where you can study how other graphicians create their pictures
by looking at in-between stages of the pictures they created!
A steps gallery looks the same as an ordinary GFXZone gallery,
but there is a little difference.
Once you click on a thumbnail in a gallery you will not get to see
a full-sized picture, like in the usual galleries,
but you will download a zip archive which contains the in-between stages
and the final version of the picture you want to study in more detail.
The amount of steps in a zip archive can be seen in the list below the thumbnail block.
We blast off this new type of gallery right away with two complete galleries.
This means you have a total of 40 mini-courses for creating graphics at your disposal!
These two galleries contain all types of graphics. There are pixelled pictures and
24bit works, originals and copies, recent pics and golden oldies. Check out our new
steps galleries here!!
In the galleries you will find plenty of steps by graphicians who also participate in the
coop compo which the GFXZone currently is organizing.
So this gallery can be used to study the working-methods of your partner if one of these
graphicians turns out to be your team partner in the compo!
BTW, the registration periode for the coop compo
ends next saturday (the 11th). So if you still plan to enter the compo, you'll have to hurry
and send us an email soon!

GFXZone coop picture compo
|
|
It has been one week since we posted the news of our intentions to organize a team-based
graphics competition. The response since then has been very impressive and with the help
of our visitors we managed to upgraded our proposed rules into a set of
final rules for the compo.
Listed here are the most important changes, compared to the proposal from last week:
We have set up a timeschedule, including deadlines for this compo.
The registration period will end at 23:59h CET on Saturday the 11th of November 2000 (11/11)
and the compo will start a few minutes later when we will mail all the participants with
the information they need. Deadline for the entries to arrive at the GFXZone is
23:59h CET on the 12th of December 2000 (12/12).
The competition will be topic based. The GFXZone will set a topic and this topic
will published on the GFXZone and mailed to the participants as soon as the competition starts
The complete set of rules can be read here and discussed
on the forum.
If these rules and the list of confirmed entrants on the right of this page
convinced you that you want to participate, please send
us
a mail right away...
Remember that this competition is not about creating the most pixel-perfect
picture known to mankind, but just about having plain old-fashioned fun!

Despite all the excitement surrounding the GFXZone coop compo,
we also managed to create some regular updates for you.
Three new archived galleries are available for you to download and enjoy.
Firstly there is a new archive for the Hungarian party AntIQ 2000.
There is plenty of cool content in the
archive (2230KB),
for example pics by Grass
and Magicboy.
With the help of M4-io we also created an archive for the Dutch Party Bizarre 2000.
This archive contains the previous picture of the week by
Kirk,
the current picture of the week
by Mirage
and some stylish 24bit pictures by various RBI members. Download it
here (3121KB).
The last added archive is for Coma 2000,
which is an Canadian party held last september.
Downloading (1131KB)
this archive will give you a very nice 8bit by Snake Grunger
and a stylish manga picture called 'Riyujin'.

Aancsiid submitted a news-item regarding
SIGGRAPH:
The Demo Scene has thrilled us all --
but many people out there haven't experienced DEMOS.
This is a call to action for scene members to
contribute to SIGGRAPH.
Siggraph is an annual computer graphics conference with thousands of attendees.
It's a week focused on the cutting edge of cool computer graphics.

GFXZone coop picture compo
|
|
A lot of people have brought to our attention that they did not agree with
some of the rules for the GFXZone coop compo.
These people made their point by stating that it was not in the spirit of the scene
to ask participants for proof of their graphical abilities because that would limit
the amount of people that can participate.
Although this was not our intention with this rule, we do agree that these people
have a point.
That is why we are proposing a change of the rules, and we really want to hear what
you think about it. In short this change means that participants can choose how they
enter the compo, either as a team or as an individual! Visit the
forum
to state your opinion and read more about the change we are proposing

There is more news regarding the GFXZone coop compo.
First of all I'd like to welcome the graphicians that joined the fun.
Take a quick peek on the right of your screen and look who joined in.
Note: If you are using a low screen-resolution, you'll have to scroll down the page,
because the list is simply too large already!! (after only 2 days)
So if this convinced you to join the competition, please send
us
a mail asap!
On the forum
the concern has been voiced by the visitors that the GFXZone would only allow the
so-called "elite" graphicians to participate in the compo.
The confusion on this point was started by ourselves because we state in the
compo rules that we only want "quality" graphicians
to participate. This is a poor choice of words. What we actually intend to say is that
we expect a basic level from the participating graphicians.
I have posted a more in-depth reply to these points on the
forum
so visit it to learn more or to participate in the discussion.

GFXZone coop picture compo

Wow, it has been just 24 hours since we posted the news about the
coop competition
and the response so far has been overwhelming and very promising!
So, as a result, we will keep you and the rest of the visitors as much up-to-date
as we possibly can!
For starters, we added a small table on the right side of this news page.
This table will show you which graphicians have already confirmed that they will participate.
So here you can see what you are missing out on if your name is not in that list!
If you want to enter the compo, just send us a mail
Secondly, the time limit. As you can read on the
forum
people are wondering what time limit this competition will have.
Our view is that the coop teams should get about one month to work everything out.
If you want to read more about this, jump to the
forum.
Another discussion on the forum is about the GFXZone setting a topic for the competition.
At first we were not planning to do this, but we heard some pretty convincing arguments.
We would like to get more feedback about this issue, so use the
force, you!
BTW, I hope that all the people on the forum who are still doubting whether they
should participate will send us a mail soon
which tells us that we can count on their support! :-)

GFXZone coop picture compo
|
|
Yes, it is true! The GFXZone will organize a graphics competition!
A while ago on the GFXZone forum the idea of a so-called coop picture
has been discussed by the visitors of our forum.
A coop picture is a picture on which multiple graphicians cooperate to create a picture.
The crew of the GFXZone likes the prospect of such cooperations between graphicians and for
this reason we started discussing the possibility of organizing such a compo ourselves.
These discussions have led to an interesting concept of a graphics competition
where teams of 2 graphicians each create a picture.
We have found 3 very capable scene-graphicians who are willing to be the judges
for this competition. These judges are 3D Addict,
Cyclone and
Saffron!!
Now we are interested in what YOU think of this idea!
Do you have suggestions which may improve this concept?
Do you want participate?
Read the rules for the compo
and visit the forum to make yourself heard!
We started a thread
on the GFXZone forum, use this thread to voice your opinion about the compo.
If you or your company wants to sponsor this competition,
drop us a line asap!
|
|
|
The personal gallery of 3D Addict,
who happens to be one of the judges for our
GFXZone coop compo, has been given a big update.
The new 3D Addict gallery has a stunning total of 100 pictures,
which means that 24 bitmaps were added for this update!
The content of the first three parts of the 3D Addict gallery has not been changed in this update,
so regular visitors can go straight to the last two parts of the gallery.
Additions to the fourth part of the 3D Addict gallery include pictures
and logos that were not yet available in the previous version of the gallery.
You'll most certainly want to visit the fifth and last part of his gallery
because it contains all his latest pictures - a lot of brilliant
surreal fantasy and space-inspired artwork which will definately amaze you.
Enjoy!

Two of our personal galleries got a makeover for this update:
Antony & Nero
The new Antony gallery has
40 pictures, which is 18 extra compared to the old one. We have added some of his
older works and also some bitmaps which have that typical Antony style.
Previously the Nero gallery had only 7
pictures, and now it has 10. "Not much of an update", I hear you say. This might
seem true, but his gallery was simply incomplete without these pics :-)
We also added some more archives for you.
Kindergarden (322KB)
was held earlier this month. Good entries by Arcania and Mermaid.
Also two archives for a Russian demoparty called CAFe, download entries for their
trace (566KB)
and pixel (983KB) compos.
And for 1999 we added an archive for a party called
Proxy (315KB).
|
|
|
Saffron is one of those graphicians who gives
new meaning to the word atmosphere! That is why we were delighted to update
his personal gallery on the GFXZone. Compared to his old gallery there are 18 new pictures,
totalling the gallery at 47 outstanding bitmaps which range from his oldest stuff
upto his most recent work! Visit Saffron's updated personal gallery now!
Also we added three more archived galleries. The first one is for Performance 2K.
This archive (520KB)
was created with the help of Random,
who send us the winning picture, which is unavailable on the regular ftpsites. Thanks!
The other two archives are for RTS Y '99,
the pics are nothing really special but we made galleries anyway!
We have a pixel (642KB)
and a trace (376KB) archive.
And lastly we made a minor update on our Assembly 2K
pixel gallery. Because of an unfortunate error at this party there was a picture that
was credited to the wrong graphician (pic 12).
Kudos to goro/delirium for bringing this to our attention!

Hi there,
I'm a producer with ModernGroove,
an interactive entertainment company based out of Vancouver, Canada.
We are currently looking for original 2-dimensional art to serve as visual
content for our PlayStation 2 music product.
We'd seek to acquire this content on a NON-EXCLUSIVE basis for worldwide use in
perpetuity. In return, we'd offer a credit in the product and a copy of the
finished PS2 product.
If you're interested, please send us some samples of your art. They
needn't be high-res, approximately 640x480 will suffice.
Contact Mark Bayrock and visit their
website for more information.

We have created a new personal gallery on the GFXZone. This gallery shows you all about
the work of one of Mankinds graphicians, Zaac.
The gallery has a total of 60 very good pictures, spread over three galleries.
There are a lot of 8bit pics and logos, some of these were created for the demo-scene
and some were created for games he worked on. There are even two traced pics by Zaac.
Some of the pictures in this gallery have never been officially released!
The brand new Zaac gallery can be visited here
A couple of weeks ago we updated the personal galleries of
X-man and Nytrik.
This update was not complete because I just updated them again!
The Nytrik personal gallery got
4 pictures (pic 2, 4, 13 & 16) added and now has a total of 20 pics.
This mean the first page in his gallery is completely filled. I wouldn't mind if Nytrik
gives us a reason to start another page soon!
The X-man gallery now has two
pics added that he created for the LTP4 party (pic 11 & 17).
Besides these new pics we also replaced two pics that were previously only available
as JPG by full 24bit PNG versions (pic 3 & 14).
And last on todays list are changes to our gallery for this years edition of
Mekka & Symposium 2000.
We were alerted by a visitor that some of the pics were credited to the wrong people,
so we corrected this now. If you have never seen the brilliant pictures from this party,
now is a perfect time to
do so!
Thanks to [cp/teklords^witchcraft] for pointing this out!

The Lucky & Tigrou party (LTP) is a party that really keeps the scene-spirit alive.
From what I've heard all over the net this years edition of LTP was something special, and judging from the quality
of the graphics in the LTP compos, it was something special indeed!
I can give you a couple of the highlights of the pictures that got to participate in the pixel compo,
but you will have to visit the gallery yourselves to experience it all.
This gallery boosts the latest works from Inferno,
Nytrik, Splif, X-man
and a lot of other talented sceners...
For the oldschool compo the LTP organizers put a 16-color limit on the entries.
It is good to see that many graphicians are able to create very good graphics with a limited palette.
Entries by Gelmir, Inferno,
Splif and X-Man.
Oldschool is timeless!
The first place in the trace compo was for Boz.
The scene he created for his picture is very Boz-like -
even without signatures you should be able to guess which pic is his :-)
But rest assured that the rest of the entries is worth a look as well. There is some good stuff here!
Awaiting your visit are around 60 pictures.
Don't be shy... go ahead, enter the gallery...
Start your visit here.

Today we bring you another 8 bit gallery - gallery 13!
There are images by people like Das, Dzordan, Fame and Razorback.
Stay tuned for more theme galleries.
|
|
|
Finally another update to the site!
This update is just a small one while we are preparing for the update of next weekend,
when we will present you a full LTP4 gallery. To wet your appetite we put up the
X-man entry from LTP4 as image-of-the-week.
His entry finished 8th on this party (!!).
We have uploaded two archives for Fiasko 2000.
The pixel archive (732KB)
is worth downloading because of the winner entry by Temny,
and we also have the pictures from the trace compo (787KB)
|
|
|
As promised earlier this week we now bring you an update to the Nytrik
gallery and archives for Evoke 2000.
Lets start with the gallery for Evoke 2000. The only reason that we have
created archived galleries for this party is that there are not enough pictures to fill a full-size gallery!
It is not the quality of the entries, because the quality is insanely high! There are kick-ass entries
by Critikill and Peachy and a coop
picture by legends Cyclone & Acryl (!!!),
which is btw also our image-of-the-week.
Download the Evoke 2000 pixel (1679KB) archive or you'll
be missing out on al this eye-candy.
We also have an archive for their trace(681KB) compo.
The new and improved Nytrik gallery shows that Nytrik is really pushing his
own distinct personal style to perfection. We added 6 pictures to his gallery for this update. Among the new
additions to his gallery is the previous GFXZone image-of-the-week (picture 11 in the gallery),
which killed the competition in the graphics compo at the recently held Buenzli party.
Visit the updated Nytrik gallery here.
|
|
|
For the ultimate collectors among us we have added quite a few archives to the archived galleries.
6 galleries for 4 different parties.
The pixel compo (170KB) at the
Avalcon 2000 party has a decent entry by Fademan.
We also have a gallery for their trace compo (596KB).
The compo entries for Durango 2000 were mixed in one
archive (374KB) and you will find some good traces.
Same goes for the mixed archive (605KB)
for Millennium 2000.
In the trace archive (552KB)
for the Xuventude galacia 2000 net party are some good traces,
and there is something (not so) special with the entries in the
pixel compo (502KB) -
All the pics are of girl faces :-)

We have made additions and updates to the GFXZone, this time the personal galleries of
BenJ, Flood
and X-man got a GFXZone makeover (tm).
Enjoy the new additions!
From these three, there is one completely new gallery, the one for BenJ.
This gfxer has been around for a long time and the gallery we created gives you a perfect overview of
his work. There are 44 pictures ranging from his oldest stuff up until his newest work.
Start your tour through the BenJ gallery here.
The Flood gallery had a total of 23 pictures added.
Among the additions are the bitmaps he created for Enlight the surreal, the Noice demo that competed on Assembly 2K.
Since 20 of the 23 new Flood pictures are in the newly created second part of his gallery,
it would be easiest to begin your journey right there.
The X-Man gallery has been regenerated
from scratch. This fixed some filenaming problems and gave us a change to add two
(somewhat older) bitmaps in the process.
|
|
|
Three more parties now have archived galleries on the GFXZone.
First one is VEP 2000, which has a good picture by
Ilke in the
24bit archive (637KB).
You can also download the pixel (429KB)
and trace (759KB) archives from that
very same party. Thanks to psy for sending this stuff!
The other archives are for Escape 2000, both for the
Finnish and the
Swiss version of this party.
The archive (571KB)

So you have just dowloaded and watched all the demos from Assembly 2K?
That looked pretty good he?
I can imagine you now want to download the graphics from Assembly,
but you are hesistating because the total download of all the zip-files from
the graphic compos on the regular ftp channels is well over 100MB(!).
In that case I have good news, because the GFXZone has
already created a gallery with all those graphics for you!
Now is that good news or what? :-)
Assembly was held last weekend and as usual the quality of the graphics was high.
If famous names is what you are after, you will be pleased to hear that the gallery has high-quality
entries by Saffron, Marvel & Neurodruid. But I can assure you
that the rest of the pictures is equally worthy of your undivided attention!
We have put online galleries for the oldschool, raytrace and pixel compos.

A couple of archived galleries have been added to our evergrowing collection of archives.
The first zipped archives are for Flag 2000.
The 24bit archive (860KB)
has a graphic by Blackhand which I rather like and you can
download the pixel archive (175KB) here.
Among the traces (821KB) is a good entry
by Narn and the cool winner picture by
Dob is undoubtably inspired by an Indiana Jones movie :-)
Other stuff is from some older parties. From Elevator 2000
we have both a pixel (511KB)
and a trace archive (316KB)
and from Ukonx 2000 we can offer you a
pixel archive (813KB)
and an archive with some nice traces (470KB)

Two weeks ago the GFXZone offered you an interview
with the french graphician tenShu.
At that time we also promised a gallery with his images, now that gallery is online
and ready for you to visit.
In this gallery you will find a total of 39 of his graphics, ranging from his first scene-related
art up to his latest works like Omen 666! (2nd gallery, picture 9).
Another personal gallery that has been in the pipeline for a long time is our Tmk gallery.
This gallery features some of his oldest works, but also some more recent 24bit quality graphics including a
coop picture which he did with 3D Addict. After visiting his gallery I think you will agree with me that Tmk probably has
a slight fascination for the Orient... :-)
Visit his gallery right here

This time Mr Ed brings to you a new theme gallery entiteled: Hidden message
gallery. See if you can find the hidden messages
in these pics. Next week we will put online the same pics with the hidden messages highlighted. In the mean time,
happy spotting :)

Earlier this month a party took place in Wroclaw, Poland.
This party was Horizon 2000.
Today you can get the entries from the graphical compos at Horizon
right here on the GFXZone!
And you definately should watch them because the average quality of the graphics is high.....
Lazur entered the compos with two pieces of art,
Io & Zoltan put up their share with traced graphics and
Dzordan contributed a total of three (!) masterpieces.
But this party also has a lot of quality graphics by people you have probably never heard of before!
Btw, could this be the first party ever where Lazur actually won a graphics compo? :-)
|
|
|
New archived galleries for two parties.
The first is Remedy 2000.
You can download the Remedy 2000
traces here (957KB),
the pixel archive (1267KB)
has a nice entry by Neurodruid that won the pixel compo.
DejaVu 2000 is another recent party.
The winner picture by Optic makes downloading
those graphics (500KB)
worth your while.

GFXZ ANNOUNCEMENT
|
|
A new time has come.. I have now been the main editor of GFXZone since 1996. This has been a good time for me
and I have enjoyed see the site becoming bigger, better and more popular. As GFXZone improves, it also
requires more and more time, which is something I'm having less and less of.. and therefore I had to
resign from my editorial post. I have been very busy for the past many
months, and I'm sorry about all the emails from you which I did not reply to.
Anyway, the bright side of this story is
that NdK, who has been
the co-editor of GFXZone for over 1 year and has been part of the team for over 2 years, is taking over the editorial
tasks. Which means that from now on NdK is the main editor of GFXZone! Congratulations and good luck :)
(I will still be involved but on a much smaller scale)
BTW, we are always looking for new staff members so If you are
interested in making GFXZone even better write NdK a mail. We especially need a new archive maintainer, somebody who
will gather images from recent party compos.

This week Wishbone brings us the tenShu interview.
His gallery is on it's way as well. BTW, have you seen the heated debate on the
GFXZone forum about the Scanning/retouching?
What do you think about it? You don't need to register to give your opinion :)
|
|
|
If you only want to see nice and cute graphics then you definately do not want to
check out our latest addition to the GFXZone: Razorback.
His graphics are seriously dark and gloomy!
The interview the GFXZone
had with Razorback gives you a good overview of himself and his graphics. Did you know
for example that he is creating all his scene graphics on an Amiga?
There are very few pictures in his gallery that do not contain a demon in some form or
another, so if you have a weak heart or any sort of objection to this kind of graphics,
you should not visit his gallery

Making of Shadows of Reality is a detailed walk through,
written by Der Punkt, about the creation of the
Shadows of Reality pic.
BTW, we just got an email from a happy Der Punkt, here is what he wrote us:
"..After the interview on gfxzone, I had an offer from
Eclipse Ent./Austria.
Further more, Rogue Ent./Dallas was interested in me,
and so was Discreet Monsters/Germany.
But something else came up as well.
Have you heard of Serious Sam, a game that was
proclaimed as DL hit of the year, and the "a game
thats worthy of calling it a doom sequel" =)
Well, it turned out it was Croatian developer, that
was under my nose for 5 years =)))
So, nevertheless, I contacted them immidiately, and I
was hired as Character Designer and skin artist =))
So, I don't have to leave Cro, we'll have a kickass
publisher (can't say which one), and a game that has a
future as bestseller.
Anyways, take a look at www.croteam.com
-note- the engine is done from scratch
Damn, I am happy =))))
take care,
dP"
Now, is this great or what?! :)>

Today the GFXZone brings you a couple of new archived galleries. We have two new archives
for the Czech Amiga party Apocalypse 2000.
The winning picture in the 2D compo (962KB)
by Slayer won that compo with over twice as many points as the runner-up!
In the trace compo (1394KB) the difference between
number one and two was even bigger! Here the winner is a very good trace by Zoltan.
The icing on today's graphical cake is an archive that has the entries for the C64 graphics compo at
Mekka & Symposium 2000!!
It never stops to amaze me how incredibly cool C64 graphics are. Seeing is believing, so download
the archive here (274KB). Some highlights
in the archive include pictures by Rayden, Cyclone & Deekay!

I also like the demo-esque atmosphere of the entry by Neurodruid.

I was checking out the recent party archives posted by NdK (look below) this weekend, and
noticed one pic which was such a bad scan+fix job that it made me laugh. Not that
Pewex
(the author) didn't mind using a JPG as a base of his pic, he simply converted the JPG to 8bit and didn't mind leaving
the still visible JPG compression, and even signed it "No copy". I hope this was a joke, but a bad one
as the pic ended 3'rd in the 2d compo. Pewex... this is toooo lame..
Anyway, this gave me an idea for a Bad fix gallery,
to show some of the worst attempts of cheating.
I mean people cheat, but Pewex didn't even bother to clean up the mess.. BTW, feel free to
mail us such pics.

GFXZ ANNOUNCEMENT
|
|
There seems to be a bit of confusion about the current Image of the Week pic.
Almost was taken from Visualize home page, and therefore we assume it was drawn by him, and not by Visual Ice
as some of you suggested (because it's signed Visual Ice). Another confusion is about the Unreal handle.
There are two people who use the same handle.
One Unreal is the very known Polish coder(ex Pulse) who just formed the new group Sunflower. The other Unreal is
from Hungary and does gfx only(to our knowledge) and is currently being interviewed by us. Things get more confusing
because Visualize and Unreal(pl coder) did
work together on some productions and apparently they did a few pics together as well. Everything gets even more confusing
because originally,
Visualize was a member of Sunflower, but just got kicked(Saffron/TBL joined instead, btw). As for why Visualize signed his pic
Visual Ice remains a mystery(a joke perhaps?). Anyway, from now on we'll write Unreal(pl) and Unreal(hu), to avoid any
further confusion.

Another addition to the archived galleries: Contest '99.
